GOLD HUNTING COILS
The
small 10 x 5” (250 x 125mm) coils are most commonly used for mullock heap
hunting, areas of heavy over growth hunting and just searching for the finer
gold on the patch. With excellent sensitivity and good depth capabilities it is
an excellent choice for any detector operator. Their size gives a relatively
small view of the ground but it is because of this that they are most suited to
the smaller targets.
Smaller coil = increased sensitivity to smaller targets.
They are also excellent for maneuverability as they are very light weight and
can either be used as a detecting coil or locating coil.

DD PRO Operation hints & tips:
The DD PRO coils are very good on the high mineralised soil types and due to its
small size it is even less susceptible to ground noise in these areas. This is
mainly due to the small field being emitted from the coil.
The smaller the field the less it will be affected by
mineralization.
Being elliptical, the DD PRO has a heightened ability to pinpoint easily, thus
it has been used quite readily as a locator once the larger coil has found a
deep target. As the hole can get quite large if the big coil was to search the
area, the 10x5” coil is perfect for a hand-held locator. To work out how to
pinpoint easier use the nose of the coil and slowly creep up to the target while
swinging. The targets will start to respond approximately 1” in from the tip
of the coil. If you repeat the action 90 degrees to this direction you will have
a good cross-hair view of where the target is. The DD coils are most sensitive
through the centre of the coil so this is the best method for target pinpointing
with this small coil.
MONO Operation hints & tips:
The small mono has a benefit over most mono coils due to its size. This comes in
the way of heightened sensitivity and less susceptibility to mineralisation.
Again, the small field being produced reduces the ground noise to some degree
however the coil is still a mono coil and this can cause some mineralised
conditions to create ground balance issues. Having said that, the target
response of this coil is sharp and clear so most likely the targets will be
easily heard if within the range of the coils magnetic field.
Being a mono it has the windings around the perimeter of the coil so pinpointing
can be done by either using the tip of the coil or tilting the coil to vertical
and using the outer edge. You will notice that the outer edge is sensitive all
around the coil. When swinging this coil you will need to overlap your swings by
approximately half the coil length to be thorough and having a slow swing speed
will ensure you hear the very tiny targets.

This
size is the most commonly used coil for prospecting, mainly due to the new
detectors being released with a coil of this size. Many prospectors enjoy using
a coil of this size because it gives reasonable ground coverage, has good
sensitivity, has average depth capabilities and is relatively light weight. You
will find the coil easy to maneuver and it is quite easy to pinpoint with.

DD PRO operation hints & tips
As this coil is a PRO series DD you will find it to have slightly better
performance ability that the standard DD. A DD PRO has heightened sensitivity
and a better performance on the heavier mineralised ground due to a slightly
stronger field strength from the coil. Mainly noticeable on the sub gram pieces
closer to the surface, it has a good ability to pinpoint a target. The ‘hot
spot’ for pinpointing is approximately 1” in from the tip of the coil.
Usually right under the top edge of the Coiltek Manufacturing logo sticker which
has been placed there from new. By swinging this coil quite slowly and
overlapping at least a quarter of the coil it has the potential to help clean up
any patch of the smaller targets. Remember, we have seen 5+ ounce nuggets found
with this coil at reasonable depths so the DD PRO has excellent all round
ability (they’re just the ones we know about!)
MONO operation hints & tips
Mono coils, overall, have a stronger field strength than DD’s. Therefore it is
said that they punch deeper and have better sensitivity on ground which has no
mineralisation. So when using the Coiltek MONO coils you will immediately have
an edge over the DD of similar size. By swinging slowly and overlapping at least
half your coil this coil can be a very good locator of targets which are either
small and shallow or larger and relatively deep. Using the edge to help pinpoint
will ensure a quick target retrieval time as the outer perimeter is very
sensitive. When in quiet ground it will give you smooth operation and a strong
response to targets and will have minimal touch sensitivity. It can be used to
help pinpoint if you have used a very large coil for a deep target.
Anti-Interference (A.I.) operation hints
& tips
These coils have been designed to cancel out the effect of external interference.
This can come from power lines, electric fences and the spread of the metro area
just to name a few. Their performance is very good compared to the DD coil and
we estimate their ability to only be approximately 5% behind the DD’s depth.
The sensitivity can sometimes match the DD’s and therefore you can be
confident when swinging an A.I. that you will have the chance to get the smaller
targets and the larger ones. The main sensitive area of these coils is directly
down the centre which is similar to the DD. Approximately 1 inch in from the tip
of the coil will be the best area for pinpointing and this can help increase
your target retrieval time. Their ability in mild to heavy mineralised areas can
sometimes become noisy as they tend to behave like a monoloop coil as they
struggle with the ground change so having a slow swing will help minimise the
noise.

This
coil has been an excellent addition to the range of products we offer. This is a
unique design as it is fully water proof and one of only a few fully water proof
coils we produce. The coil is potted with epoxy resin which holds all the
windings secure and provide its water proof ability. The coil comes with a
fitted skid-plate which has been designed so it can be easily removed to clean
out trapped dirt or dust or to remove completely and swing without the skid. The
coils robustness will ensure that if run without a skid plate it will endure the
knocks and bumps during normal swing action. (solid skid plate also available)
The strain relief on the coil could be the only area of water intake so always
remember to have this hand tight plus half a turn before you are going to
submerse the coil. Also remember that the coil is water proof only, so ensure
that your cable plug and control box are kept free of moisture at all times.

DD PRO operation hints & tips
The DD PRO Platypus has been very well received for the hunters who prospect in
streams and creeks. Due to the elliptical shape it has been an excellent coil
for pinpointing targets. Swinging with an overlapping sweep pattern is crucial
to make sure the ground is covered well. When you have a target the slowly swing
up to it from 2 different angles and when you start to hear the target it
usually is 1 inch in from the nose of the coil.
DD coils quite often produce the signal just where the two windings overlap. The
DD coil can handle the heavier mineralised areas quite easily so would be a good
choice if you hunt in these regions. If you hunt in trashy areas then the DD
will be the only coil to discriminate.
MONO operation hints & tips
This mono coil has super sensitivity. It is very well balanced and its
pinpointing ability is very easily used. When you have located a target you can
tilt the coil to one side and use the outer perimeter of the coil to pinpoint.
The whole outer perimeter of a mono coil should signal and give an easy
pinpointing ability. Again, as the coil can be submersed it can easily see the
very small targets trapped in stream and crevices. This coil is best run
slightly above the ground as it sometimes can be hyper sensitive due to ground
conditions and/or external conditions. With a slower swing speed the coil will
have the ability to see the very small targets and quite reasonable depths (this
can vary on different detectors and settings used) and still have the chance of
responding to a larger deeper target. Remember to overlap the mono coils by at
least half if you want to ensure you cover the area well.

The
14” (350mm) coil is one of the best all-round performing products Coiltek has
produced. With a combined advantage of excellent depth and sensitivity it has
outstanding performance ability in the majority of goldfields around the world.
Being an extremely robust coil it has the capability of lasting many seasons in
the field which will make this coil a primary choice when prospecting.
Suited to the more open field where little or no overgrowth will hinder the
swing it will provide an excellent coverage area to ensure a comfortable action.
For a mid sized coil it is light and has good maneuverability ability and
because it is not of the open web design it can help when there is long grass or
sticks which need to be moved out of the way or pressed closer to the ground.
The coil can be used either just off the ground or scraping the ground when
swinging. It has minimal touch sensitivity and has good ability to pinpoint
making target retrieval quick and accurate.

DD PRO ELITE operation hints & tips
The DD PRO ELITE is the newer series of DD coils as the PRO ELITE series have
been developed to enhance depth and sensitivity capabilities. The main
sensitivity area for the coil is through the centre when looking from above and
when pinpointing the target will start to respond approximately 1 inch in from
the tip of the coil. However, the deeper the target in the ground the response
and pinpointing ability moves more to the centre of the coil. To ensure good
ground coverage, be sure to overlap the swings by at least one quarter the size
of the coil and by moving slowly with this coil you will allow the field to
penetrate to good depths and excite the deeper targets. It has great sensitivity
to small targets as it is capable of seeing the sub-gram nuggets at good depth.
This is an excellent choice when there is mild to high mineralisation conditions.
The PRO ELITE coil is better suited to the Minelab SD and GP series.
MONO operation hints & tips
The MONO coil has also been one of the most popular coils we have produced as
this coil was first introduced to the detecting community when the SD2100’s
were released. It has superb sensitivity and depth capabilities and when swung
close to the ground and at a slow speed it has the ability to find sub-gram
nuggets at depth and also the larger ounce pieces at great depths. Being a mono
coil it is better suited to the low to no mineralization areas for the SD and GP
machines however since the introduction of the new GPX series detectors from
Minelab these are being used in the high mineralised with great success. Its
ability to pinpoint small targets is easy as the outer perimeter of the coil is
its main sensitive area so the closer to the coil the target is the response is
more to the outside of the coil. If tilted to one side when trying to locate a
target in a dig hole pile it will ensure you get an accurate location quickly.
Remember to overlap your swings with a MONO by at least half a coil to ensure
you do not miss any targets.
ANTI-INTERFERENCE(AI) operation hints
& tips
The AI coil is the best solution for those high interference areas when
detecting. When experiencing excessive noise from power lines, phone towers or
general atmospheric noise, this coil will run quiet and smooth by cancelling out
the interference. This ability opens up new detecting areas and potentially new
patches. When swinging this coil, a quarter coil overlap is necessary to cover
the ground efficiently and by swinging slowly and close to the ground small
targets are easily distinguished from the threshold. The main pinpointing area
of this coil is approximately 1 inch in from the front edge and down the centre
of the coil and will give a strong signal when close to the surface. This
coils’ ability is best seen firsthand so if you get a chance to try an AI coil
you will notice that its performance is very compared to the DD coil of similar
size. These are also used on the SALT LAKES of Australia with outstanding
results!

The
17 x 11” Elliptical coil has and is proving to be a fantastic all round
performing coil. Released to provide a well balanced coil which provides the
prospector with good maneuverability in tight areas it continues to be a
preferred coil of use for a lot of operators.
With its elliptical shape it provides good coverage over the ground and the
ability to search in and around the terrain and is also complemented in having
excellent depth and sensitivity capabilities. When nugget hunting it can pick up
the sub gram pieces and ensure that pinpointing is made easy with the tip of the
coil.
It has a centre mount shaft mounting position with an 8mm nylon nut and bolt for
extra strength. Also, being of the solid coil design it can help when grasses
are long to push down close to the ground and not be hindered by sticks and the
like stopping the swing. This coil is a great choice for excellent overall
performance and balance and continues to find gold in many of the world’s gold
prospecting regions.

DD PRO operation hints & tips
With its excellent detecting capabilities you will find that this coil will
ensure you have a great chance in the field as it will search deep as well as
seeing the smaller sub gram targets quite easily. By keeping the coil close to
the ground (no more that 1 inch above) you will find that the 0.1 gram nuggets
can be heard at a couple of inches which is proving that the coil has good
sensitivity. When pinpointing, slowly work up to the target and listen for the
first response heard. Usually this is within the first inch in from the tip of
the coil. Then repeat the process at 90 degrees from the first direction. Once
you have a crosshair view of the location it becomes a lot easier to accurately
dig for the target. The DD PRO allows the operator to have quiet operation in
the heavier mineralised areas ensuring faint target responses are heard. Needing
only to overlap the coil by one third, this coil can cover the ground quickly
due to its elliptical shape making this a great choice for the more open areas
in the detecting field. This is a good medium-sized patch hunting coil.
Anti-Interference (AI) operation hints
& tips
To say that the AI coils are sleepers is a huge understatement. We have heard
that these coils are proving to be a coil of choice in a lot of areas around the
world as detecting areas become more susceptible to external interference. This
interference comes from Electrical towers, mobile phone towers, electrical
storms and other detectors. It is also prevalent around built up areas which are
close to detecting sites. It will allow the operator to run with a smooth
threshold when a DD or MONO coil is extremely noisy. Its performance ability is
only just behind that of a DD PRO however it can sometimes become slightly noisy
when the mineralsiation content increases. These coils are best run on the more
mild ground but perform excellently when encountering external noise. These
coils were designed for the SALT LAKES of Western Australia but continue to
prove their ability in many fields around the world. These coils do not need to
run in cancel mode on the newer detectors as the coil is doing the work of
cutting out the interference. These are best run in DD mode and will also work
well with the discrimination function. Sensitivity is excellent and depth is
very good so this coil is a good choice for many hunting areas.

If
you are in need of a deep searcher with excellent ground coverage then this size
of coil will fit your requirements. Designed especially for the deep ground
without losing too much sensitivity these coils have provided many options for
prospectors with a lot of ground to cover. They allow the user to feel confident
they are looking deep into the ground, whilst not having to drag the coil due to
being too heavy and cumbersome. These coils are very robust and can last well
throughout the prospecting seasons and with the replaceable skid plate there is
no need to worry if you are scraping the rough ground as these can be easily
replaced.
These coils are more suited to the open prospecting fields where the undergrowth and rocks are do not hinder a full sweep pattern

DD PRO operation hints & tips
Providing a large detecting magnetic field will ultimately help with depth. This
is where this coil can help you recover deep targets. By swinging slow and
overlapping by at least a third of a coil you will ensure the ground is searched
thoroughly. Best suited to open detecting fields you can cover a lot of ground
when you use this sized coil. It has good ability to see the smaller targets
which are close to the surface. For example a 0.2gram target can be clearly
heard at around 3 inches in ground with suitable ground conditions. This DD PRO
will be perfect for the mild to high mineralisation areas where the Mono coils
can be not so suitable.
At the front edge of the coil, about 1 inch towards the centre is where the
sweet spot is. This sweet spot, once you get used to it will allow for accurate
pinpointing on the smaller targets which have a clear response. The more broad
deep signals will be more apparent more towards the centre of the coil.
GOLDSTALKER MONO operation hints &
tips
With its large ground coverage, excellent depth capabilities and new lightweight
design the 18” round GOLDSTALKER mono is a great choice for searching out the
gold! With this new design the coils ability has been improved not only by the
weight but with its stability and depth capability. The smoother the threshold
the easier it is to hear those deep faint targets and the more likely you can
encounter targets at depth. This coil may struggle to hear the 0.2 and 0.1 gram
targets unless they are within the tip inch of the surface but that is not what
the coil is best suited for. This coil has better ability to hunt deep and
recover the larger targets. It is also a perfect option for the larger open
fields where there is minimal obstacles so would consider this coil as a perfect
tool to go hunting for the patches. Remember to overlap your swings by at least
half a coil and keep the swing low and slow.
ANTI-INTERFERENCE operation hints &
tips
Being one of the largest coils available in the A.I. configuration this will
provide great depth capabilities whilst still eliminating any external
interference produced by things like power lines, electric fences and mobile
towers. It will have a broad search pattern and provide good sensitivity to
targets ranging from 0.2gram close to the surface to large targets at depth.
Although it does not have the sensitivity and depth of its DD and mono
counterparts it will still enable the prospector to get into areas where these
other coils become very unstable. If you do not wish to use the cancel function
on the later detectors where you can experience a loss of depth you can be
ensured of good ground penetration with this coil. Suited mainly to the more
open terrain it is best handles with a swing assistance like a bungee cable and
a slow swing speed will allow the magnetic field penetrate deep.

When
there is a requirement to ensure you are hunting for the deep targets then this
is the coil to use. This very large shaft-mounted coil ensures that you can
cover the ground more efficiently and have a good chance of finding targets
which the smaller coils may have missed. However, being such a large
solid-designed coil it can be difficult to use in tighter areas and get heavy if
used all day.
This coil is best used at the start of the day when the body is fresh and can handle a few hours with this tool. Extra bungee cords or other products which help take the weight off the shoulders will be essential if you do wish to run this coil for longer periods. A slow – very slow swing speed will allow the ability of this coil to be optimized as fast movements can sometimes create tracking problems with larger coils. This can then mean targets are missed and depth. It does have reasonable sensitivity to the smaller targets but of course these need to be closer to the surface.

DD PRO operation hints & tips
This is by far the best configuration to use for a coil of this size. The DD
ability will help with the mineralisation in the ground especially where it can
become changeable and more mineralised. The DD will have a blade like effect
down the centre of the coil when swinging so you will need to overlap the swings
by about a quarter of a coil. To pinpoint, use the cross hair method and
approximately 2 inches in from the tip of the coil is the initial reactive area
so this can help retrieve the target quicker. It will take some practice to
master this coils pinpointing ability. We can suggest you have a smaller coil or
pinpoint probe on you when you are digging those large holes to help direct the
efforts. Open areas which are clear of vegetation and rocks will help ensure an
easy swing and allow the coil to stay close to the ground for deep penetration.
Anti-Interference (A.I.) operation hints
& tips
When you are requiring good performance in high interference areas then this
coil can help improve your chances. Even though it is a large coil it can still
have good performance when patch finding or searching for deep targets. When
swinging large coils like this the user must be aware that the sensitivity of
the coil is reduced so expecting to find sub gram targets at depth can give
false impressions of this coils ability. It can see small targets like these but
they more than likely need to be close or on the surface for a good response.
Working slowly with this coil will also help with its stability and
responsiveness. As it is a large coil it ‘looks’ at a large section of
ground under it so if the soil mineralisation increases or is changeable then
you can experience some tracking noise. All Anti-Interference coils can be noisy
when the ground mineralisation is medium to high or is changeable. However if
you require to cover the ground efficiently and want to find deep large targets
in an area of interference then this coil is a great option.
